You ever been so broke, you were forced to survive on free snacks from the office pantry? If your answer was a no, good on you; you handle your spending habits well each month! However, if you find yourself struggling to make ends meet, there’s no shame in admitting you need help in saving money.

We’re not talking about putting away loose change; we’re talking about apps which offer discounts AND cashbacks – incentives that make saving money a little less tedious, a little more fun. But how would you know which app is worth your time and effort? We’ve rounded up some of our favourite local apps for you to check out below:

What's covered in this article?

1) Boost

A mobile wallet app that allows you to go cashless by topping up money into your account. Pay for your transactions at participating merchants just by entering your 6-digit pin code. Boost not only helps you control your cash outflow, you get digital vouchers of up to 50% off at participating merchants such as Fave, Lazada, Boost Juice, MBO & many more.

Besides, there’s a unique feature that’s available for all users: you can earn cashback each time you complete a transaction. A ‘Shake Reward’ will pop-up, where if you shake your phone, a random cash amount (ranging from RM0.10 all the way to RM5!) will automatically appear in your account.

2) Fave

If you’re a big fan of all things discounted, this app will be your new go-to companion! Fave is able to do two things at one go: firstly, offer you some of the best deals in the market (up to 80% off) for a variety of sectors. The app uses a geo-tagging system that allows users to scan their location for nearest available deals, instead of having to scroll endlessly to find the right one.

Secondly, the app will reward cashbacks to users who shop via the app. The amount can go up to 30% at thousands of merchants and the best part is, you never have to top-up your account, just connect your debit/credit card or online banking and pay.

3) CashMe

CashMe is another app which lets you earn up to 20% cashback and points in just two simple steps: spend at any of the participating merchants and upon payment, show your QR code to the merchant to scan. Earn even more whenever friends you’ve referred to the app spend as well. The cashback in your account can then be used to pay future bills at any participating merchant.

There’s no minimum spending required. What sets this app apart is their aim to raise funds to help the underprivileged – an opportunity for you to give back to society! Whenever you use CashMe to eat, play or shop, they will donate a portion to their charity partners Mercy Malaysia, Budimas Foundation and Great Heart Association.

4) ShopBack

Speaking of cashbacks, the ShopBack app also lets you spend money AND get money. Browse and buy items from over 500+ stores, which will then be converted into cashback (depending on the store, it can be anywhere from 1% to 11%). Choose from some of the most popular brands like Lazada, Agoda, Zalora, Taobao, and AliExpress to name a few.

You would then need to wait for your cashback to reach the minimum redeemable amount of RM10 before transferring it to your own bank account as real cash. At this time of writing, they’ve paid out RM25mil in cashback savings! That’s not all, you can also enjoy a wide range of promotions, deals, vouchers and coupons – all of which stack up to even more savings for you.

5) The ENTERTAINER

Another savings-oriented app is The ENTERTAINER, which gives you thousands of choices for buy-one-free-one offers and discounts. Who doesn’t love free stuff? The different categories include food and drinks, attractions and leisure, beauty and fitness, fashion and retail, everyday services, as well as travel offers. We can hear the shopaholics rejoicing already.

The best part is that as you redeem each offer, you’ll earn a form of rewards points called ‘Smiles’ which you can use to buy back your favourite offers. This app also lets you share your account with up to four friends and family members, in addition to having a system that keeps a detailed record of your total savings per month.

Ready to start spending smart?

There’s a reason why the piece of technology that’s (metaphorically) glued to your hand is called a ‘smartphone’. When using these apps correctly, not only do you get to enjoy plenty of savings, you also get rewarded for doing so.

If you’re really serious about wanting to control your spending and save more money each month, why not use less physical cash? Instead, opt for more traceable sources such as debit and credit cards so that you can monitor the inflow and outflow of funds. Check out this handy list of apps that help you do just that!
